Background of the study
Community elders have traditionally played a central role in conflict resolution, particularly in mediating inter-family disputes. In Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, elders are revered as custodians of cultural wisdom and social order (Ukpabi, 2023). Their involvement in mediating family conflicts is grounded in traditional values and a deep understanding of community dynamics. Elders use customary practices to facilitate dialogue, encourage reconciliation, and restore harmony between conflicting parties (Okon, 2024). With rapid social changes and modernization, however, the role of community elders is evolving. Despite the pressures of modern legal frameworks, many families in Oron still turn to traditional mediation as a trusted method for resolving disputes. Recent studies underscore the effectiveness of elder mediation in preserving family unity and preventing long-term conflicts (Nse, 2025). This study investigates the impact of community elders in mediating inter-family conflicts, exploring the methods they use and the challenges they face in an increasingly complex social environment.
Statement of the problem
Inter-family conflicts in Oron continue to pose significant challenges, despite the long-standing tradition of elder mediation. The traditional methods employed by community elders, while effective in many instances, are sometimes undermined by modern legal influences and changing societal values (Ebitimi, 2024). Moreover, the increasing complexity of family dynamics, driven by economic and social pressures, has made it more difficult for elders to resolve conflicts efficiently. This situation results in prolonged disputes that affect the overall social cohesion of the community. The gap between traditional mediation methods and contemporary conflict resolution needs necessitates an evaluation of the effectiveness of community elders in resolving inter-family conflicts, and the identification of strategies to enhance their role in the modern context (Udo, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the impact of community elders in mediating inter-family conflicts.
To identify challenges in traditional mediation methods.
To propose recommendations for improving conflict resolution practices.
Research questions:
How effective are community elders in mediating inter-family conflicts?
What challenges do they face in the modern context?
How can traditional mediation be integrated with modern conflict resolution approaches?
Research Hypotheses:
Community elders significantly contribute to the resolution of inter-family conflicts.
Modern societal changes negatively impact traditional mediation effectiveness.
Integrative conflict resolution strategies enhance mediation outcomes.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the vital role of community elders in maintaining social harmony through conflict mediation. The findings will provide guidance for community leaders and policymakers on how to support and modernize traditional mediation practices. Ultimately, the study contributes to fostering stronger family bonds and community stability in Oron Local Government Area (Ikechukwu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of community elders in mediating inter-family conflicts in Oron Local Government Area, focusing solely on current practices and challenges.
Definitions of terms:
Community elders: Respected senior members of a community who provide guidance and mediate disputes.
Inter-family conflicts: Disputes arising between members of different families.
